Abstract

Tatiana Willis

Factory farming in America hasn’t always been recognized, but over the years people have been making a stand more than ever. For example the KFC scandal, where People found out that KFC a popular chicken fast food restaurant uses factory farmed chicken. They also found that these chickens were being mistreated by the workers who threw them against walls and stomped on the animals as well. Also a common theme with factory farms is the fact that the animals are in a very cluttered living condition where they die and do not have enough room to move. With this evidence at stake people who care did not want to support a company where chickens were being mistreated. This also goes for any other company who used companies that committed animal abuse, risk of health, and environmental pollution. These factory farms that we hear about today all started in the 1920’s. For the reasons of the discovery of vitamin D and A .They discovered with these vitamins that they helped animals grow. Doing this without sun or outside activities which left farmers more time to keep producing the produce they were making profit off of. Thus began factory farming a great step in feeding the nation for cheaper and giving people enough to eat. With factory farming comes a negative side, such as health risk, animal abuse, and mental problems.

When it comes to the laws there is a couple of things to go off of. Lots of the laws in place right now are all about animal space and the way they are being brought up. In Arizona the people voted that pigs need to be able to turn around at least and that is law. Other regulations are on horses and cows where they must be able to get out and walk around when on long trips. Also people of California have voted that pregnant pigs and baby calfs cannot be held in certain cages while at that state. As far as laws trying to be passed recently was the one saying that factory farms and farms have to report how much toxic waste they produce to the government. These farms would also have to use methods to protect citizens and the nation as well. As for solutions to factory farming is petitioning, sending letters to the senators that speak for you to change the law, and using your voice to speak out about factory farming and what they do. Another option is becoming vegetarian which can help significantly reduce the need for all the animals they kill a year in inhumane ways. If you can’t do that buying food from farms that do not treat their animals and the environment in a inhumane way is also very good.

Food Article

When reading "In Defense of Food" I was really interested in what Michael Pollan was saying about how for years before processed foods health was good. I agreed with him about how our ancestors and places around the world have low rates of cancer, heart disease, and obesity because they cook from scratch and use natural foods. It was amazing that the government tried to cover health information up because they wanted people to keep buying their products. The industry did this as well for money. It's appalling people should be looking out for one another to keep each other a live and healthy, but no people are just greedy. Because of this greed now people have a interesting view on what healthy is, and because of this greed science has warped what is healthy and what is not even though thy don't know much. In the article Michael was talking about how margarine used to be healthier than butter but now we know different and nutritionist gave that information. I found it scary to know that industries were lying for money and scientist were not fully clear on what was healthy and what was not.I believe that people should eat more vegetables and fruit and natural foods, and knowing that obesity, heart disease, and cancer dropped during world war two because of the lowered rations. Meat and dairy was cut back so much and health was good and then after world war two the rations went back up and it all started again. I also believe that Americans are obsessed with health, but i think they have a right to be with all the processed and tampered with unnatural foods on the market today. I also think that with all the diet related health problems such a obesity and diabetes that of course Americans will be health crazed.Overall it was a very good captivating article.

Novalena

Novalena
Novalena is a 30 year old born in San Francisco California to a Puerto Rican family. She grew up in the Bay Area in San Mateo close to San Francisco, where she went to Hill Del High School. At Hill del she got great grades and took AP classes. She applied to 4 colleges UC Davis, Berkley, Santa Clara, and UC San Diego, she got into all but UC Santa Clara and went with UC Davis because the professors seemed to care about the student and not just his thesis.
Graduated and off to Europe with some friends Novalena traveled to many places across Europe Paris Niece, Amsterdam, London, Barcelona, and many more. Getting back to the States Novalena knew she wanted to branch out, but she wanted to stay close to family. She found herself moving to San Diego with some friends and looking for a job. When she got one it was at a mortgage company and she was quickly deflated by it all, she knew there had to be more to life. So she went with an idea put in her head by people who would say “You have a great voice why not do acting or something”. She went back to school for acting at city and found a job at a radio station based on helping woman.
This job at the radio station and the fact that people I her family have chemical imbalances inspired her 2nd book “ Total Female Package”. The book is a self help book which helps woman to be able to believe in themselves and look in the mirror and really love the woman they see. The book gives tips on how to do this by the ways Novalena lives her life. Novalena lives her life with 5 important values Love, connection, growth, authenticity, and relationships. She learned authenticity by one of her two heroes which is her father who always told her “Do things your way and don’t let other people tell you how to live”. Her dad is her biggest supporter and her parents are her best friends, she loves her family.
Living her life and loving her job Novalena is perfect for because she loves learning about people and growing from it. With relationships she takes liked values from each and wants those in the quality of the man she marries. Getting married is her goal and dream, where she will have two kids of her own and adopt many. In her family she wants to be an active whole and involved in the community, and her kids school, but she does not feel pressured everything happens at the right time she never feels instinctively pressured. Everything that has been taught to her in her life and everything she chose to believe has gotten her very far, with her positivity, strong, and confident in self she is the “Total Female Package”.

View on america in Afghanistan

I agree with Evan that we need to fix what we created (a mess) because it would not be right to contribute to a mess and not help clean it up. so there for we need to stay for only that reason. I also believe that our army needs to watch very closely for suspicious activity to keep everyone safe but on our land to prevent terrorist attacks.

Story of Barder

Barder was always a normal street dog with no home and low self esteem.Until one day a little boy with an orange turban approached the alley kicking a tiny pebble with black shiny spots and it's gray smooth surface. Barder was timid and moved back into the dark corner shadows of an old tattered box. The boy sharply looked up at the noises direction and slowly walked toward the tattered box.Barder was scared , the boy looked down and whispers "don't be afraid I won't hurt you , I live just around the alley way and walk by often, often enough to hear your thoughts.
The boys turban glowed Barder was impressed , but still timid.
" You Barder are depressed and I, well... I need a friend. I believe we all need friends". The boy was smiley a warm golden smile across his face. Barder moved closer as the boy spoke, Barder had a feeling this boy was as kind as his mother would have been if the child soilders didn't shoot her. Barder would never get over that, but this boy was offering friendship and no one ever paid to Barder.
The boy stroked Barder and walked back down the alley from where he came. " come Barder aren't you hungry". Barder was and he trusted the young boy of only about thirteen.
Barder the boy spoke I am not a normal person and you not a normal dog, come let me show you what I mean do not be afraid you are bound to be great"
Barder never felt so special in his life as the boy climbed a top his back and they flew off. " Barder said the boy my turban is me and i am it, but with out my orange turban we would never be amongst the clouds for it is my magic and i am the transfer no else, but me."
That night Barder did not know it , but it was the the happiest and last of his time.

Next Day

The next day a girl passed the alley way and notices a dog in a dark corner in a old tattered box, lying next to his lifeless body was a orange turban blowing in the wind.
